Latinwomen.org – No Human Rights for Latin Women?

Most of the countries in South America are still under the influence of the Catholic Church and hence consider abortion as a crime. Only country in the area in which abortion is legal is Cuba. The Latin American women are agitating to make abortion legal in all circumstances. The Latin women’s movement is trying to win certain rights for the women in the region. However, there are different social classes in the region and their goals and needs are different and this results in disunity among the women’s movements. The highest rate of teen pregnancy has been reported from the South American countries. Lack of education, sexual abuse by relatives and poverty are the main reasons behind this alarming situation. Pregnancy at teenage increases complications associated with pregnancy and maternal mortality. There are widespread unsafe abortions happening due to sexual abuse and due to lack of legal support for abortion. There is a complete ban for abortions in countries like Honduras, Nicaragua, Chile, El Salvador, regardless of the potential risk to the health of the woman, rape or incest.
