Orlistat is a medication that will help you lose weight if you are obese or overweight. It works by blocking chemicals (enzymes) in your intestines that digest fat. Almost a third of the fat you eat is blocked by orlistat. Undigested fat is not absorbed into your body and is dismantled with stool. The usual dose is one capsule - 120 mg three times a day with each meal. However, you do not need to take one if there is no fat in your meal or if you do not perform three main meals daily.
The Orlistat is the only available drug that is prescribed to assist in weight loss. Two other medications - Sibutramine and rimonabant - previously used to help with weight loss are no longer available in the UK due to concerns about the health of people.
