In coin flipping, we flip a coin up in
the air and check which side is shown when it lands, in our effort to select
from the two available and equal probable answers. A coin flipper is sometimes used
to settle a dispute between two groups or two parties. This is a type of
solution with two possible outcomes.
The flip a coin method was practiced by
Romans in the olden days itself. Their coins had the picture of their emperor
on one side and on the flip side a ship was depicted. In England also this coin flipper practice
was there and it is known as cross and pile. These days, coin flipper simulators
are used to make coin flipping very easy and fast and without any setbacks.
In this method of decision making, a coin
is thrown up in the air so that it rotates several times. Before throwing the
coin or while it is rotating in the air the interested party calls “tails” or
“heads” to indicate which side is preferred as his side. The other party
automatically gets assigned to the opposite side in the flip a coin method.
When the coin begins to rest the toss is considered as completed and the person
whose side comes on top is declared as the winner.
There is a possibility that the coin
lands on its side, by landing against an object like shoes or getting stuck on
some other thing. A computational technique suggests that the probability of
the coin landing on its sides is one in 6000 when the coin flipper is made of
American Nickel. To overcome these shortcomings, we now use electronic coin
flip simulator.
The coin can be of any shape. It need not be circular in shape. For flip a
coin method, larger coins are more preferred by people than smaller ones. For
tossing in high-profile occasions like Cricket World Cup or the Super Bowl,
they use ceremonial medallions.
Three-way
There is another technique
which is usually known as three-way flips. This flipping is used to select two
out of three choices. For this three coins are flipped. If two coins come up
with the same sign on top and the third one with the other side, the third
person loses and he goes out, leaving only two players. If the aim of this
three-way coin flip is to choose one out of three, the reverse of this game is
played or a new coin
flipperprocedure between the remaining two players
is done to find out who is the final winner.
