Domestic Worker (Maid) in Singapore (update 2018)

In the nineteen thirties, wealthy families in Singapore started hiring "domestic workers (maids)”, whose domestic workers (maids) were typically from Guangdong, China, with white coats, black trousers and long braids. During that period, the domestic worker had a special title of "Mom Sister", who was respected in the family and somewhat replaced the character of the family hostess in disciplining the children. Later, with the rapid economic development in Mainland China, women in Guangdong Province also made fewer transoceanic jobs and Mom Sister was gradually replaced by foreign domestic workers (maids) in neighboring Southeast Asian countries. With the rapid economic development in Singapore, more and more women are leaving the family to become professional women. The demand for domestic workers (maids) in Singapore has become even greater. There is one domestic worker in every three families. The number of domestic workers (maids) in 2017 Reaching about 240,000, of which up to 56% of Indonesian domestic workers (maids), 32% of Filipino domestic workers (maids), and the remaining domestic workers (maids) in Burma, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
