Regulations for Apartment Security Cameras
In Illinois, all landlords must adhere to certain regulations when it comes to installing and using apartment security cameras. Landlords are required to give written notice of any surveillance equipment they intend to install as well as provide detailed information regarding how the camera will be used. Tenants must also be notified if video footage from a security camera is being recorded or monitored by a third party.
In addition, landlords may only use video footage from their security cameras for legitimate business purposes such as monitoring the premises for safety reasons or collecting evidence of criminal activity on their property. The footage cannot be used for other purposes such as collecting personal information about tenants or monitoring their activities without their consent. Furthermore, landlords must ensure that all recordings are kept secure and not shared with anyone else without permission.
