Benzodiazepines are consciousness-altering agents that belong to GABA agonists, also known as minor tranquilizers in the past. They are prescribed in medicine because of their calming properties. The muscle relaxation can be both a treatment goal and a side effect. The discovery of these drugs was a medical discovery of a breakthrough. In particular, because these drugs are better accepted and are much more reliable in overdose than the barbiturates that have been used up to that point. Benzodiazepines are widely distributed, approximately 10 million prescriptions per year in the Netherlands. Up to and including 2002, use has increased annually. From 1 January 2009, a large part of these medicines will only be reimbursed by health insurance in the Netherlands if the doctor prescribes a specific code (B2 code: concerning specific disorders) on the prescriptions on the prescription.
