H1N1is swine flu. There have been death and hospitalization with the flu in countries all over the world with most cases being relatively mild. At the moment, there is a vaccine for the H1N1 which is good news, but the bad news is that swine flu is still serious and widespread. The following are some of what you should not do to prevent swine flu.
• You should not expect the ordinary flu vaccine to prevent swine flu: The vaccine for seasonal flu doesn’t protect against the disease. The H1N1 vaccine is a completely different vaccine. It is best to get both vaccines as seasonal flu can also be serious at times, especially for the elderly and small babies and those with immune systems which have been compromised
• Don’t think that a face mask will help in preventing swine flu: As of now, it is not clear how face masks are effective in preventing the transmission of the H1N1 viruses. They are not recommended in most cases to avoid catching swine flu except if you are at high risk of severe illness caused by influenza or you are caring for someone has a flu-like illness. You will still need to:
o Wash your hands regularly
o Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue whenever sneezing or coughing
o Avoid touching your mouth, nose, and eyes
o In case you have flu-like symptoms, you should avoid mingling with others until the flu is gone and you take another 24 hours after that.
o There is a need to stay 6 feet away from people who have flu-like symptoms.
